PRESS RELEASE
(issued by the OECD in conjunction with the RYA)
The Maritime Initiatives Development Fund based in Brussels has published their initial findings into the financial advantages to Brixham Yacht Club of the growth in the Brixham Sonata Fleet.
The fleet has increased by 400% compared with the 2007/8 season. On the assumption that 10 Sonatas will take to the water next season with an average crew size of 4 (excluding dogs and small children) this means an extra 32 people in the Club on a Thursday evening spending an average of 12 euros (or £10 for those stick in the muds who refuse to acknowledge Europe as a Federal State) this is an additional £7,000 per annum which, if weekends and regattas are included amounts to £10,000 of additional income.
Initial studies into the drinking habits of the crews of Blues breaker and the piano by the MIDF suggest that a further £5,000 could be added making a massive £15,000 per annum in revenue to BYC.
A spokesman for BYC declined to comment
Following publication of this study the MIDF have been contacted by a yacht club close to Brixham offering cash incentives for the Sonata fleet to transfer its activities to them. |

A reliable source close to the Crown has today confirmed the rumours
that contracts have just been exchanged for the purchase of Sonata Number 9.
It is confidently expected that the new team (codename Windemere) is expected to mount a serious challenge for World Series 4 next season and that the Far Eastern betting syndicate masterminded by Suleiman Wilkinson-Smythe (name altered to protect identity)) has been thrown into chaos by this unexpected move.

Keen observers of the
Brixham harbour scene cannot have failed to notice a pianos racey new pick up buoy styled in bright yellow-definitely this seasons colour.
Is it just coincidence
that this exactly matches the hull colour of Valhalla-currently for sale? I
don’t think so!.
Informed sources are
suggesting that Stevie L-S (aka Mr Big) may be trading the piano in for a more
comfortable craft and being a fashionista is already matching mooring gear to
his new vessel.
At the time of writing Mr Big was not available for comment. However if the
rumour is true it will rock the SWS world. If untrue, we hope soon to welcome
Sonata number nine into the pack.

Incident aboard Simply Alto during race on August 12th
News for the SWS site is that contrary to popular opinion I did not try to get rid of my co-owner by chucking him overboard at the windward mark. Graham managed to achieve his absence from the leeward rail all by himself when he missed his footing going over the coachroof as we tacked. We try to encourage people outside the cockpit to wear lifejackets. This was the case on Thursday, Graham's jacket inflated immediately lifting him significantly higher out of the water. Mast man grabbed his lifejacket collar, helmsman put boat into wind and hove to, then grabbed his legs and rolled MOB back inboard. All over in less than a minute. Then radioed in with message that we had retired due to MOB incident, downed genoa and sailed for the harbour. No injuries to MOB except to injured pride and a few bruises on the chest.
We were doing 5.5knots as he went over, slowed to stop in about 3 boat lengths! Wind 15 to 20knots gusty, sea state choppy. We had changed up from No2 jib to No 1 Genoa on previous run since wind appeared to be going light, then it gusted up again on this leg.

A well known World Series Skipper (name withheld for security reasons but vessels name rhymes with "crash") has reported that a Sonata owner is enquiring about basing his highly tuned racing machine in Brixham attracted by the high quality racing.
The Harbour Master confirms that he has received an e-mail enquiry this week asking about the availability of a mooring.

I read the article on the Sonata website about gambling syndicates abroad and I thought I'd let you know about the one we have over here in Africa. The crew (mainly the Philippinoes and Russians) avidly await the Sonata results to see whose going to scoop the prize money each week!!!
We watch the race via the many web cameras around the bay, I've attached a few screen shots from last Thursdays 22nd April's race as proof. As last weeks race was abandoned there is a bigger "pot" this week so we could do with some tight racing and breakneck finishes.... I'll leave that in your good hands.

YOU’VE GOT TO BE IN IT TO WIN IT
As most of you know EUROPLAS are sponsoring the World Series 3 and are very generously donating a new Goacher mainsail. By coincidence the value of this sail is almost identical to the amount we Sonatas are being charged for mooring this year. The main difference however is that the sail should last for 5 years whereas the mooring is only available for 6/7 months.
Consistent with the ethos of World Series Racing (its all about taking part and having fun) the sail will not be awarded to the Series winner. Instead all Sonatas will have the opportunity to win. Every time a Sonata starts a World Series Thursday race it will earn a draw ticket, the more races started the more chances to win .If Sonata 9 is unable to start the Series at the beginning it will still qualify for tickets for those races actually sailed. This continues until the end of July when at an after race event to be hosted by a glamorous and very famous film superstar (currently being negotiated) the winning Sonata will be announced.
To give EUROPLAS maximum exposure the winner is required to fly the sail at Torbay Week and Dartmouth Regatta. If unable to do so the sail is to be loaned to another boat that is taking part. The rules have been agreed by the World Series Governing Body in Geneva and are non-negotiable.
Isn’t it exciting ? I can’t wait! |

practice race. I suggest we can all meet before boarding at the BYC steps to see who wants to do what with whom? -obviously this is not for everyone - any way the experience crews (on Sonatas) can assist new owners the better the racing will be – this could be simply answering questions or crewing on boats for the practice race – I hope all of us are prepared to make the most of this chance to get everyone up to speed. I have put this up a forum topic on the sonataworldseries site so you may chip in at will. Chris Coote is so devoted to helping others that he is jumping off Alto and leaving it to Anna who has never helmed the boat or been in a yacht race before!!!! – what a star. |

ALL important stuff and I’ve kept it short so please read and respond as you wish…………
All will be transferred to news pages as these messages become 'tired'
- Babbacombe SC are organising Spring and Autumn regattas with a dedicated start for Sonatas – message from Chris Coote
- BYC RCS Meads has asked me to tell you that if enough Sonatas enter they can have their own start in the Spring Regatta – I understand this is run from Torquay so you will have to contact them direct – not a world series event.
- The Harbour Dues Dispute will be heard at 7:30pm on 13th April at BYC – a lot can be done by just showing up to boost the numbers and imposing pressure – should be entertaining – the press love this kind of confrontation.
- I have made an informal approach to the RYA and they are able to offer some race coaching (FREE) – anyone interested please mail me…..this is the last time I shall post this topic.
- The “Europlas points make prizes” Sail raffle starts soon so every time you race you will be automatically entered into the “Sail of the Century Draw” . Many thanks to St Tom and Europlas our sponsors. Drawn in July.
- Baymarine have also sponsored our series – I am trying to get a photo-shoot organised – maybe after the first proper race – tell me that you will be available and then I can invite Baymarine and the press. Go up and buy stuff off them – get a card to allow you a discount….support home industry. That’s moor than enuff. ED
Good luck and good racing.

Dear Sonata Owner
The new season is upon us & 2010 subscriptions for membership of the National Sonata One Design Class Association are now due. The annual fee is £15.00 per year. We believe this figure represents value for money and that the benefits of class association membership certainly enhance the experience of owning a Sonata.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR RENEWAL
Please write a cheque for £15 payable to “NATIONAL SONATA ASSOCIATION” Write your boat name on the back of the cheque an post to:
Tom White, Tregonhayne House, Tregony, TRURO, Cornwall TR2 5SE.

Once this form and your cheque have been received you and your boat will:
• Receive a 2010 Class Association Membership Card
• Be entitled to compete in Sonata events.
• Be entitled to vote at the AGM.
Yours aye
Tom White
Membership Records
Membership is only a requirement for Sonata racing outside Brixham
We have not been asked for a certificate at any local regatta.
IMPORTANT PLEASE READ THIS
You will probably be aware that the mooring fees/harbour dues for 2010 in Brixham Harbour are going up by 13.4%. This represents a colossal and totally unjustified rise. It has been decided that the most effective way of making our feelings known is to write individual letters to the Chairman of the Harbours Committee, ROBERT HORNE. His address is “Greystones”, 45 Avenue Road, Torquay,TQ2 5LG
In writing you make like to consider the following;
At the Brixham Harbour Liaison Forum at its meeting on the 25th November 2009 under the heading “Harbour Budget Review Working Party” Captain Mowatt reported as follows “…as a result of the work of the Harbour Committees Budget Working Party, the recommendation for next year would be for an average increase of 5% on harbour charges. The recommendations would also include a proposal to equalise the harbour dues between all three harbours over a 3 year period………without these increases Brixham’s (account) deficit would be £37k”.
Note that it does not say “in addition….to the 5%” but suggests instead that the recommendations include an equalisation factor in the 5%.
There is no comparison between the facilities and security enjoyed in Torquay Harbour with the situation in Brixham where every single year a number of vessels break loose. Any equalisation should have regard to the relative quality of moorings.
Was any consideration given to savings in the way Brixham Harbour is administered? It is just not acceptable to keep hiking up charges without corresponding savings. Could not seasonal staff be engaged for peak times with skeleton staffing in winter?
Most insurers will not cover craft in Brixham harbour from November through to April and therefore in effect we pay for just 6 months usage. Is this the case in Torquay?
There is a notice on the board advising that there a berths available in Torquay inner harbour. You might like to enquire how much these are and for what part of the year.
PLEASE WRITE YOUR LETTER SOON. IF NOTHING IS DONE HARBOUR CHARGES IN 2 YEARS TIME COULD BE 40% MORE THAN LAST YEAR.
